Head Coach 

Phil Edworthy

Coach Phil founded MVP Football Academy in 2016 along with Sean Gaudon and has served as the Director of Football Operations and Head Coach since then.  

He is a teacher at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School in Cambridge and has over 20 years of coaching at the high school level. During those years he has served as Head Coach, Defensive Co-Ordinator, Special Teams Co-Ordinator, DB coach and LB coach. He has won 3 WCSSAA Championships, 2 CWOSSA Championships and an OFSAA Bowl Championship.  

Outside of high school, coach Phil spent 6 years as the coaching LBs at Laurier University, winning a Yates Cup Championship. He also has 10 years of rep football coaching experience, serving as a DB coach, Defensive Co-Ordinator and Head Coach with the Cambridge Lions, where he led his Varsity team to back to back championships.

Film 

Matt Carey

Starting out with a position on the Laurier film team in 2012, Matt then worked in the CFL in 2013 & 2014 for the Roughriders and Tigercats respectively.

Returning to Laurier in 2015 as the Assistant Video Coordinator, a role he still holds today, Matt was a part of the 2016 Yates Cup winning program.

In 2021 Matt came on board at MVP to help us extend our ability to coach such a geographically diverse group of players by having practice and game film to review remotely.

In 2022 Matt expanded his work into two new ongoing roles, first as Video Coordinator for the Tri-City Outlaws and then taking up an offer to film for 519 Sports Online, bringing local sport to the masses.

Matt will also be returning to the Tigercats this summer as a Video Assistant, capturing the new CFL 'all-24' endzone film.

Defensive Coordinator 

Jesse Alexander

Coach Jesse starred as a Linebacker for Laurier University from 2002-2006, earning 2x OUA All Star, 2x USports All Canadian, and the 2006 OUA Defensive Player of the Year award.
A 3-time Team Captain, including for the 2005 Vanier Cup winning squad, he was inducted into the Laurier Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
Drafted 39th to the Saskatchewan Roughriders he suited up for the Toronto Argonauts in the 2007 season.


Coach Jesse began his coaching career at Laurier in 2007, leaving after the 2016 Yates Cup winning season to be the Special Teams Coordinator/Linebackers Coach at York University.
In 2018 he was named Defensive Coordinator at the University of Windsor, holding that position for 2 years.
Through his coaching career his players have earned over 15 OUA All Star nods and won 2 OUA Defensive Player of the Year awards.
No stranger to coaching High School age players either, he was Defensive Coordinator for Tri-City Predators in 2009, winning an OFC Championship, and reprised that role for the Cambridge Lions Varsity program from 2012-2014. 

Now entering his third year as the MVP Defensive Coordinator, starting with the 2023 season Coach Jesse has joined the University of Waterloo staff as Special Teams Coordinator & Defensive Coach.

Offensive Coordinator 

Nick Rockell

Coach Nick, who has been coaching football for over 30 years, started as Offensive Coordinator with MVP in 2021.

He was Running Backs Coach for the Laurier Golden Hawks from 2018-2022, also spending time with Bluevale Collegiate as Defensive Coordinator and Cambridge Lions Varsity as Running Backs Coach & Special Teams Coordinator.

Originally from the UK, Coach Nick tallied 22 years of playing football that included time at every position on the field.
Starting his coaching career as a player-coach he has been Head Coach for 3 programs with multiple years as an Offenisve, Defensive and Special Teams Coordinator at the Youth, University and Adult (men and women) levels.
In 2011 he was selected to be the RB Coach for the Great Britiain Lions program, a position he held for 5 years, and represented his country in the 2013 European Championships. 

Among his personal achievements he has won multiple UK National Championships, a European Cup Championship and was award the UK Adult Coach of the Year Award in 2007.
Coaching achievements include seeing two of his British players move to the NFL, having dozens of players selected to the various Great Britain rosters (men's, women's, university), and watching many of his former players become successful coaches.

Receivers Coach 

Steve Warner

Coach Steve is a former Receiver with the University of Waterloo Warriors, graduating in 2020.

He started his coaching journey in 2019, taking the Offensive Coordinator role with the 18u Junior Warriors which is still holds today.

Starting with the 2023 season Coach Steve will also be the Receivers Coach at the University of Waterloo.

Offensive Assistant 

Mike Warner

Coach Mike joins the MVP staff in 2023 to coach Quaterbacks.

He was the original MVP QB in 2016 and until was a QB in the University of Guelph program through 2022.
